Luke L. LaPorta, 89, of Liverpool passed away peacefully on Tuesday at St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Jamaica, Long Island to the late Rocco and Elizabeth (Ladiso) LaPorta and was a resident of Liverpool most of his life. Dr. LaPorta was a US Navy Veteran of WWII serving aboard the USS YMS-362 minesweeper. He was 1948 Graduate of Syracuse University receiving his Bachelor's Degree and furthered his education at SU obtaining his Master's Degree in 1950. He completed his education in 1972 receiving his PhD from the University of Sarasota in Florida. Dr. LaPorta held various positions in the Liverpool Central School District as a teacher, coach and administrator. He retired in 1979 as Athletic Director after 31 years of service and was inducted into the LHS Athletic Hall of Fame. He then continued working for the Development Office as Senior Director at Syracuse University for 21 years. He was a communicant of St. Joseph the Worker Church in Liverpool. Dr. LaPorta was honored in 2003 at Onondaga Lake Park for more than 50 years of Outstanding Service to the Community. He was instrumental in creating the first Little League in Central New York and served as past Chairman and Board Member of Little League, Inc., since 1983. He was the Director and inducted in 1990 to the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame. He helped develop Empire State Games and served as Central Region Director. He was the recipient of the National Secondary School Athletic Director of the Year, Post Standard Achievement Award and had Luke LaPorta Stadium named in his honor. He was also on the Board of Directors of Syracuse Skychiefs. He is predeceased by his brother Sebastian LaPorta.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Marie J. (Lubrano) LaPorta; a son, James K. LaPorta (Ellen Zerrillo); two daughters, Nancy J. LaPorta (John) Rogers and Lisa M. (Joey) Pesce all of Liverpool; a sister, Lorraine Brenner of Medford, Long Island; grandchildren, Jamey LaPorta, Theresa Hayduke, Matthew Nardone, Rick Hayduke, Cory Hayduke, Jacob Moore and a great-grandson, Blake Warner. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
There will be no calling hours.
The family has requested you join them for a Memorial Service on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm to celebrate Luke's life at Hendricks Chapel on the Syracuse University Campus. A reception will follow in Heroy Geology Building Lobby.
The Rite of Committal and burial will take place in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery in Baldwinsville. In Lieu of flowers, donations in Luke's memory may be made to Liverpool Dollars for Scholars, C/O Luke LaPorta Scholarship Fund, PO Box 32 Liverpool, NY 13088.
